Collingwood School occupies a large site on the outskirts of Morpeth, the county town of Northumberland. The school is set within attractive grounds on the edge of the town . We share the site with Stobhillgate First School, the Stobhill Children’s Centre and the MS Master Centre and have good relationships with all partners on site. We host the Morpeth Partnership Extended Services Team and the Parent Support Partner whom you will meet when you visit.
The school was built in 1954 and Collingwood opened in 1979 as a special school for children aged 4-16 with moderate learning difficulties (MLD). We provide places for 104 children aged 4-16 in our own right and through our recent federation with King Edward VIth School we can provide continuous education for our students to 19 if they choose. The federation with the High school provides benefits for both schools and we are very excited about our new partnership. Although Collingwood continues to be designated as an MLD school, pupils have an increasingly complex profile of special educational needs and we have a significant number of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
Staff numbers have increased alongside the number of pupil places and the school currently employs 12 full time and 3 part time teachers; 17 full time and 1 part time Learning Support staff, 5 of whom are Higher Level Teaching Assistants; 4 Administrative staff, a Media Support Manager, 1 Supervisory Assistant and our Caretaker.
The school is very popular and there is a high level of demand for places from pupils from outside of our defined catchment area. Pupils travel from all over Northumberland to attend, the majority travelling by mini bus or taxi but a few travelling independently, making their own way to school.
We have been inspected four times and have been highly praised for the quality of teaching and learning and all aspects of management. Collingwood was identified as an outstanding school in the March 2005 and again in July 2007.
The school has gained lots of awards over the years including OFSTED Outstanding Schools Award 2007; Investors in People Recognition 1996, 1999,2002,2005; Achievement Award 2000, 2001, 2002 until discontinued; International Award 2001, 2005; Healthy Schools Award 2003, 2005, 2007; Best School Garden award 2005; 2006; Young Enterprise Awards by the dozen!
The school supports inclusive practice and works closely with schools in our catchment area.
The school’s building whilst old, is well cared for with impressive specialist facilities in Design Technology, ICT, Art and Science. A new Media Suite will be complete by January 2008 enhancing the provision for our young people and for members of the community.
In September 2006 Collingwood School was the first special school in Northumberland to be awarded Specialist School Status in Media Arts and we are now called “Collingwood School and Media Arts College”.
We are very proud of our achievements at Collingwood and the reputation we have gained for the high standard of education we provide. We are committed to continuing to improve the work we do and welcome the support provided by parents, staff, governors and partners across a range of services.
